Lady Patriots Shock the West Irondequoit Eagles with a Five Game Quarterfinal Sectional Match

25-20, 23-25, 14-25, 25-22 and 13-25

Coming off a win at home in the pre-quarterfinal match against Fairport, the The Lady Spikers went to West Irondequoit to take on the 2nd seed and nationally top-100 ranked Eagles in what was destined to be a match to remember. The first two regular season meetings of these teams resulted in Eagle victories and this match was predicted to go the same way. The Lady Patriots had other ideas. Lead by outside hitter Allison Cappellino who had two to three blockers on her all night yet still managed to rack up 35 kills, 28 digs and 2 aces, Nikole Jasinski who had 25 digs, and Gaylen Fronk with 44 set assists, the entire team stepped up to battle the surprised Lady Eagles to a five game match.

The Penfield boys' volleyball team was there in force, firing up the fans and helping keep the energy alive. It worked with strong service support from Kristen Bona and Melissa Accorso, superb blocking by Kacey Richards and Maddie Metzger; coupled with consistent defense from Jordan Botsford. Rachel Gerling, Clare Hurley, and Maureen Ball assisted with outstanding play racking up 3 kills, 2 aces, 2 digs/3 kills, 8 blocks and 7 kills and 13 digs, respectively.

After a quick side out in game 2, Penfield contiued to dominate with consistant sets and a service ace from Gaylen Fronk and more kills from Allison Cappellino. Game 3 consisted of many long volleys in which it looked like Fairport was going to put up quite a fight but Penfield managed to again open a comfortable lead one point at a time. Sitting on a 2 game lead and still going strong in game 3, Coach Solomon showed the depth of  Penfield volleyball getting the players pulled up from the JV squad involved. Sara Madison came in to serve a strike only to have Fairport return it for a side out. When Penfield earned back the serve, Emily Richards entered the game to bang out 2 un-returned serves and dig a hard kill. The game was capped off by a kill by Senior Maddie Metzger for a final score of 25-13.

Penfield Ladies Go to the West Side For a Match With Hilton

The 6-6 Lady Patriots made the trip to Hilton to take on the 14-0 Cadets in Hilton's last match of the season. Penfield made a statement coming out strong in game one with a decisive win 25-15. The Lady Cadets would not be out played and traded point-for-point with the Lady Patriots in game two with kills by Allison Cappellino, Maureen Ball and Rachel Gerling supported by consistent passing and sets by Gaylen Fronk. Penfield stalled however and Hilton jumped out to 15-21 lead. With Melissa Accorso serving and some help by some mis-cues on the part of Hilton, Penfield struggeld back to make it 23-24 but could not put it away and went down 23-25. Game three started much the same as game two trading point-for-point until Maddie Metzger helped pull Penfield out in front with a comfortable lead with service aces supported by her teammates with several front row kills. Hilton could not get back into the groove and the Lady Spikers cruised to a  25-10 win. Hilton came out with a vengeance in game four taking the lead away from Penfield and running up a 5 point cushion causing Coach Solomon to call a time out and regroup. Clare Hurley put down a kill for sideout and Jordon Botsford served 4 points followed by Nikole Jasinski's 5 service points to get Penfield back in the hunt. The game continued to be a back-and-forth battle with multiple lead changes until  Penfield finally put it away 27-25. The match win was truly a team effort and a great win,

Lady Patriots Fall to Irondequoit in Hard Fought Battle

The Lady Patriots battled nationally ranked Irondequoit on Saturday evening and gave the Eagles all they could handle. In their last home game of the season, the patriots came out swinging in the first set and surprised the Eagles with a first game win, 26-24, on double-digit kills by Sophomore Allison Cappellino, excellent passing by Junior Nikole Jasinski and great sets to the pin by Sophomore Gaylen Fronk. The second set was all Eagles as they built an early lead and took the set easily, 10-25. The Lady Patriots were not ready to give in though! Set three saw a close battle as the Patriots fought hard but came up short in a 20-25 loss. Juniors Kristen Bona and Rachel Gerling provided tough serves and Sophomore Maureen Ball and Junior Claire Hurley provided some exciting swings and timely kills to keep the set close. Set four saw a back-and- forth battle between the veteran Eagles and the young Patriots. Penfield held a late lead but some big kills by Mary Cushman brought the Eagles back to edge the Patriots, 23-25, and take the match.  A hard fought battle was well appreciated by the coaches and Patriot fans.
